Breakdown of half guard bottom sweeps

  1. Starting position: Begin in the half guard position, with one of your legs trapped between your opponent’s legs, and your other leg hooking your opponent’s trapped leg. Your opponent should be on their knees, with their weight distributed across your body.
  2. Framing and underhook: To set up a sweep from the half guard bottom, you must first establish a proper frame with your arms to manage distance and prevent your opponent from crushing you. Simultaneously, secure an underhook on the side of your trapped leg, ideally on your opponent’s far-side armpit.
  3. Hip movement and leg positioning: Create space by moving your hips away from your opponent and slightly elevating your hips off the ground. Your outside leg should maintain a hook on your opponent’s trapped leg, while your inside leg should be actively used to control their movement.
  4. Old School Sweep: From the half guard bottom, one fundamental sweep is the Old School Sweep. With your underhook secured, reach down with your free hand and grip your opponent’s far-side foot or ankle. By elevating your hips and pulling their foot towards you, you can off-balance your opponent and roll them over to their side, landing in the top position.
  5. Knee Shield Sweep: Another effective sweep from the half guard bottom is the Knee Shield Sweep. With a knee shield in place and a solid underhook, you can use the pressure generated by your knee shield to off-balance your opponent. Once you have disrupted their base, use your underhook to drive your opponent’s upper body to the side while simultaneously sweeping their legs out from under them with your hooking leg.
  6. Butterfly Half Guard Sweep: For the Butterfly Half Guard Sweep, transition from the traditional half guard position to a butterfly half guard, inserting your inside leg as a butterfly hook under your opponent’s trapped leg. Combine this hook with your underhook to elevate and off-balance your opponent, executing the sweep and ending in a dominant top position.
  7. Finishing position: Once you have successfully executed a sweep from the half guard bottom, you’ll end up in a top position, typically in your opponent’s closed guard, half guard, or side control. Immediately establish control and maintain pressure to prevent your opponent from regaining their position.
  8. Troubleshooting: If a sweep is unsuccessful, remain adaptable and prepared to transition to another sweep or submission attempt. Consistently drilling these techniques and applying them in live sparring will help you develop a strong and dynamic half guard bottom game.

Mastering half guard bottom sweeps is crucial for a well-rounded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, allowing you to recover from disadvantageous positions and turn the tide in your favor. Practice these techniques regularly and focus on the principles of leverage, timing, and control to maximize their effectiveness.
